Athletics raises fifth-most funds for Make-A-Wish

    November 8, 2021

The University of North Georgia (UNG) raised more than $10,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, ranking fifth nationally in Division II for the 2020-21 academic year.

UNG raised $10,641.01 and was one of 11 schools to earn a wish reveal on campus. The university was one of seven schools to raise more than $10,000.

"Our student-athletes have shown their creativity and determination to make an impact in the community," Mary Rob Plunkett, UNG director of athletics, said. "They embody the excellence and servant mentality of Nighthawk Nation."

In October, UNG honored Walker Grant with its 10th consecutive on-campus wish reveal. Since 2010, Nighthawk Athletics has raised more than $205,000 for Make-A-Wish, translating into more than 20 wishes granted from the Nighthawk Nation's efforts.

UNG's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raises funds at various events throughout the academic year to support this effort.

"It's incredible that UNG student-athletes make it a priority to contribute and take charge in helping others," women's basketball player Anna Claire Atha, president of UNG SAAC, said. "Our leadership in this way is a testament to the type of students, coaches and administrators we have here who give 100% of what they have to whatever task is in front of them."

Division II schools raised nearly $200,000 for the foundation during the 2020-21 academic year. Since 2003, Division II schools have donated more than $6.6 million and granted more than 770 wishes.

"Our partnership with Make-A-Wish is more than a partnership. We draw strength from our courageous Make-A-Wish kids, and our partnership allows us to be a part of their stories," said Mackenzie O'Neill, the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee chair and a former Missouri Western State University soccer player. "Our student-athletes are passionate about making a difference, which is why Make-A-Wish has been and will continue to be a priority in Division II."
