[Michael Shannon, UNG president] So I'm incredibly excited today to be on our Gainesville Campus for our Mission Moment, and I am really excited to be with my friend and colleague Shannon Shockley. And if everyone doesn't know, when I got here, Shannon bailed me out. And so, Shannon, why don't you introduce yourself, tell everybody what you do, and tell everybody how you bailed me out?
[Shannon Shockley, administrative assistant to the vice president of regional campuses] Hello, everybody. I'm Shannon Shockley. I'm the administrative assistant to the vice president of regional campuses located here on the Gainesville Campus. Our office works with our Blue Ridge, Oconee and Cumming campuses. And I had the honor of helping President Shannon when he got here and needed some help with his calendar and running the office. And it was a great time to jump in and help our president.
[Dr. Michael Shannon, UNG president] Yeah, you ever heard of phone a friend? This is phone a Shannon, and I can tell you that the Shannon-Shannon team worked pretty well together. So, Shannon, tell me what you love about the University of North Georgia.
[Shannon Shockley, administrative assistant to the vice president of regional campuses] I love UNG. It's home. I'm a graduate, 1999, and I was a first-generation college student, graduated, and it's been an honor to be back here and help our students now fulfill their goals.
[Dr. Michael Shannon, UNG president] Yeah, so Shannon was here when we were North Georgia College, then we became North Georgia College and State University, and now the University of North Georgia. So you've seen a lot over the last 20-plus years. So Shannon, tell me what is exciting about what goes on here in Gainesville and some of the projects that you work on.
[Shannon Shockley, administrative assistant to the vice president of regional campuses] So our office supports our regional campuses. One of my favorite things is Starlight. I get to plan that event, where we bring about 2 to 3,000 people on campus and highlight what our students are accomplishing and get people onto a college campus to show them the great things we're doing.
[Dr. Michael Shannon, UNG president] Before I let you go, give me one great memory over the last year of your job and your role here at UNG.
[Shannon Shockley, administrative assistant to the vice president of regional campuses] My favorite memory always is working commencement. It's an honor to be able to stand next to our students as they're about to walk across the stage, shake your hand and get their diploma, to get to see their excitement, their nervousness and just how proud they are of what they've accomplished.
[Dr. Michael Shannon, UNG president] Yeah. It's so cool. It's a Super Bowl. I call commencement the Super Bowl around here, and we're about to do it again in a couple weeks, so rest up because here we go. So with that, it's been a pleasure to be with Shannon, one of our great colleagues, to share in the work in the mission of the University of North Georgia. We'll see you next time.
