[Narrator] - Ung is a consolidated institution from. 2013 you had north georgia college and state university and Gainesville state. College both had two standalone police departments and at consolidation they were formed to create the ung police department.

The department history goes all the way back to 1970 which is when the first north georgia college police department was formed. We're one of six senior military colleges in the country where it's a proud distinction that we have we provide police service. On all five campuses dahlonega and. Gainesville 24 hours a day and the. Others during campus hours. We're an institution of higher education. Our job is about educating and preparing young adults to be leaders in.

The workforce we offer a robust training program to all of our officers. Every year we offer at least 40 hours of in-service training. In-house including shooting simulator, range time, vehicle pursuits, and a number of other high liability areas and other topics of special interest to our officers. We talk about of how to be prepared for on-campus emergencies, such as a medical emergency. Doing physical training and someone passes out you know what do you do. We talk about armed assailant response on campus bomb threats chemical spills and we also talk about mental health crisis. How to work through that cope with that. Or even seek resources if that's necessary.

The shooting simulator provides world scenarios that our officers can participate in in a safe environment where they can learn to make judgments, decisions and it sharpens their skills and helps them think critically during a serious incident. We are only as successful in achieving our safety mission as our community helps us to be we partner with them to provide safety programs such as emergency preparedness response cpr and AED training for state training RAD, which is rape aggression defense.

[Public Safety Officer] I attended the university of north georgia. I started at the Cumming campus and i've moved around to a lot of. Different campuses. Taking a lot of different classes. The field training officer program has been a unique experience and there are two sides i can say that happens here as I've been an officer and there are sides where we are doing security sweeps making sure that the campuses are safe. And that all doors and buildings are secure. I've also seen the other side which is the more adrenaline-rushing side and we utilize both sides of the FTO process to get the best training for the officers. Here in the university of north georgia, Public safety academy is an academic Unit here at ung . They're part of the Criminal justice program. We employ several public safety academy students. In our dispatch center and our student, auxiliary patrol and we're glad to provide those job opportunities for them as they work on their education.
