Cumming Writing Center FAQ

What should students bring to a tutoring session?
  • a hardcopy of the project or essay
  • a pen or pencil
  • relevant materials, such as the assignment guidelines, research materials, or the textbook
  • comments or directions from the instructor
  • specific questions or goals
What classes will the Writing Center help with?

Any class! We see many students from English courses, and we help students working with writing in any major. We’ll also help with writing for applications, emails, professional documents, and creative endeavors.

Will a consultant edit my paper for me?
No. Consultants are trained to assist students at any point in the writing process, but editing suggests that they do the work for you. Instead, consultants model strategies that help you revise and edit your writing.
Do I need an appointment to receive help with my writing?

No. The Writing Center will work with walk-ins as scheduling allows. We encourage appointments to ensure that writers do not have to wait.

How long does a tutoring session last?

Our session blocks are for 30 minutes. Sometimes students have specific questions that take less time. Students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center at least two days prior to the due date of an assignment and repeat visits are strongly encouraged so that you can receive feedback throughout the writing process.

Can you tell me if my writing will receive an A?
No. Only your instructor can give you a grade, and consultants know that individual readers may differ in how they evaluate. Writing consultants may help you strengthen your writing
