    Terrance Dorsey

2nd Lt. Terrance Dorsey shows leadership by his care for those around him. The University of North Georgia (UNG) graduate appreciates the way the Corps of Cadets and the Georgia Army National Guard have helped him hone those skills.

A Riverdale, Georgia, native, Dorsey went to basic training before enrolling at UNG in spring 2019 and has seen a major difference in himself.

"It makes me grow a lot better as a man and a leader," Dorsey said. "It encourages people to take a step out of their comfort zone. It helps you understand not just yourself, but also the people around you."

He was a non-commissioned officer in the Corps of Cadets and a member of the Chaplain Corps. Dorsey, who earned a sociology degree in December 2022 and was commissioned as an officer in the Military Intelligence branch of the Georgia Army National Guard, considers himself to be a servant leader.

"I care about how they're doing as people more than anything else. If they're well-fed and rested and have the help they need, they have that respect for you," Dorsey said. "They care about you. They want to do their best for you. That's how you get the job done."

Army Capt. Brian Jacobs, assistant professor of military science at UNG, said everyone around Dorsey was impressed by his motivated demeanor.

"His participation and contribution to classroom discussions are excellent; so much so that on numerous occasions he has been a driving factor in the direction that I take class instruction," Jacobs said. "I have watched him consistently volunteer for leadership positions during tactical training events so that he can improve his understanding of the lessons being taught."

Dorsey was a recipient of the Georgia Military Service Scholarship, which is worth more than $85,000 over the course of his college career. Each year, 42 Georgia high school seniors receive the scholarship from the state, through which they are members of the Georgia Army National Guard and have most of their school expenses covered.
