The National Council of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has named the University of North Georgia's (UNG) SPS chapter a 2021 Distinguished Chapter.

SPS is a professional association designed for students and their advisers. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics, not just those majoring in physics.

UNG's bachelor's degree in physics prepares students for graduate studies in physics and related fields, employment in various technical positions, and secondary physics education.

Martine Maggi, a senior from Marietta, Georgia, pursuing degrees in physics and mathematics, said the UNG SPS chapter aims to get students out of their comfort zone to help them grow.

"With physics majors, it's not surprising that a lot of them are introverted," Maggi said. "Science is not a solitary experience. It is a collaborative experience. We are setting students up for success in their future careers when they have to work in teams."

She sees the award as a testimony to the efforts of the group's leadership team in bouncing back from COVID-19.

"I'm very proud of what we've done with the club. Coming back from COVID, the community had fizzled," Maggi said. "It was an uphill climb to rebuild it."
