Faculty member Broad passes away

Dr. David Broad, a University of North Georgia (UNG) professor of sociology, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6.

A celebration of life service is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 3155 Morrison Moore Parkway East in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Broad joined the faculty of UNG in 2006 and contributed to both UNG and the larger Dahlonega community for the past 18 years. Known as "Prof Dave" to his students, he was a dedicated educator who was much beloved by his students.

He encouraged them to think critically about the social world and faithfully attended every graduation and inducted every graduate into the "Safety Patrol," charging them to use their sociology degrees to make the world safe.

Broad was also an outspoken advocate for shared governance and was always willing to advocate for his fellow faculty members. As a result, he co-founded the UNG chapter of the American Association of University Professors and served as the president for several years.

He was also an avid runner and helped coach at UNG and other institutions throughout his career. Outside of work, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Holly Theatre, serving on the Board of Directors and in many other positions over the past 10 years, including performing in numerous productions.

Broad was also a proud alumnus of the University of Houston.
