William Maynard, a cadet at the University of North Georgia (UNG), took part in the Army's prestigious Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP) earlier this year.

Maynard, a senior from Kennesaw, Georgia, pursuing a degree in nursing, spent his 29 days of NSTP working at Evans Army Community Hospital in Fort Carson, Colorado. He said he appreciated the level of trust the staff there placed in him, which allowed him to grow in his skills.

"Getting out of your comfort zone is important, and NSTP provides that opportunity time and again," Maynard said. "Some of the nursing skills, you just have to use them. They're really good at giving you opportunities like that at Army hospitals."

Some of the most valuable experiences this summer came simply by seeing others doing the job.

"I was excited to be around seasoned Army nurses and civilian nurses," Maynard said.

Sgt. Maj. Nathan Barrick, chief military science instructor at UNG, wasn't surprised Maynard embraced a demanding program like NSTP. Barrick consistently marvels at Maynard's ability to balance the Corps, his other academic courses and nursing clinical rotations.

"When he shows up as a platoon leader and a nurse, he will be one of the top people in his field. He holds himself to a very high standard," Barrick said. "He has the ability to positively influence people around him. That can't be taught. He'll carry that wherever he goes."

Dr. Rebecca Coleman, a professor of nursing and Maynard's adviser earlier in his time at UNG, appreciates the student's organization abilities.

"His critical thinking skills will lead to a very long and plentiful career in nursing," Coleman said. "His attention to detail and ability to form a plan really set him up for success. He has some amazing leadership skills."
