    Nursing (BSN)

    The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is for students who want to become a registered nurse. Through rigorous classes, practice in our simulation labs, and intensive clinical experiences, you'll be prepared to be a nurse generalist with knowledge and skills to practice in acute and community settings.

    Upon graduation, you will be eligible to take the national licensure exam (NCLEX-RN) required for practice as a professional registered nurse.

    Traditional Track

    The Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing Track is designed for students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. The curriculum includes a combination of general education and nursing courses that will prepare students for practice as a professional registered nurse.

    Accelerated Track

    The Accelerated (or Second Degree) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Track is designed for students who have already earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an area other than nursing who want to become a registered nurse.

    Applicant Requirements

    UNG’s BSN program is highly competitive and only applicants that meet all requirements will be reviewed. 

    Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

    All coursework attempts will be used for GPA calculations.

    Admission is competitive and is based on GPA and HESI score ranking. The average GPA for the fall 2022 cohort was 3.62 and the accepted applicant average HESI score was 87.10%.

    Traditional Track Applicant Requirements

    • Earned grade point average of 3.0 or higher
    • All coursework attempts will be used for GPA calculations
    • Completion of the Health Educations Systems Inc. (HESI) Admission Assessment (A2) Exam with a minimum score of 75%
    • Completion of a minimum of 35 credit hours with a grade of “C” or higher
      • 35 minimum hours must include:
        • 12 hours of required science
        • 6 hours of English
        • 3 hours of required Math (MATH 1111 or higher)
    • Applicants must complete all remaining core courses with a grade of "C" or higher
    • All program requirements must be complete prior to the start of the BSN program

    Accelerated Track Applicant Requirements

    • Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • Earned grade point average of 3.0 or higher
    • Completion of the Health Educations Systems Inc. (HESI) Admission Assessment (A2) Exam with a minimum score of 75%
    • Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or higher:
      • College Algebra or higher
      • Chemistry I & II with lab
      • Anatomy & Physiology I & II with lab
      • Microbiology with lab
      • Elementary Statistics
      • One of the following: Intro to Psychology,
        Sociology or Human Growth & Development
    • All required science courses must be taken within five years of the application deadline

    • Academic Renewal

      Traditional track students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 may be eligible for Academic Renewal. Review UNG's Academic Renewal policy online. Students approved for academic renewal may take or repeat all 20 hours of required Area D and F sciences and Math (MATH 1111) by the application deadline. Once complete, a new program admissions GPA will be calculated using only required science coursework. 

      Post-baccalaureate students who do not have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and whose degree was awarded more than three years prior to the application deadline, may take or repeat all 20 hours of required Area D and F sciences and Math (MATH 1111) by the application deadline. Once complete, a new program admissions GPA will be calculated using only required science coursework.

    • Health Education Systems. Inc. (HESI) Admission Assessment (A2) Exam

      Students must complete HESI with a minimum cumulative score of 75%

      • HESI A2 testing criteria update: as of January 16, 2022, built-in calculators will be permitted
      • Create an evolve account to register for the HESI
      • Students must register for the HESI exam at one of the UNG Testing Centers or at a Prometric Testing Center using 201234 as UNG's ID number.
      • Our Testing Center has instructions on how to register for HESI and test dates
      • UNG nursing department requires students to be tested on the following sections of HESI:
        • Anatomy & Physiology, Math (personal calculators not permitted), Reading Comprehension, and Vocabulary
        • Must have a minimum score of 66% or higher in each section
      • Exam must be taken within twelve months prior to the application deadline and may only be taken twice per year from the time of the first exam.
      • Must be six or more weeks between exam dates
      • Deadline for HESI exam:
        • Fall application cycle: January 15
          • Example: Must be taken between January 16, 2023 – January 15, 2024 for application deadline January 15, 2024
          • Spring application cycle: June 15
            • Example: Must be taken between June 16, 2022 – June 15, 2023 for application deadline June 15, 2023.
    • Program Course Requirements

      Applicants must complete required core courses and major requirements prior to the start of the program.

      • Area D: CHEM 1151/L/CHEM 1152/L or CHEM 1211/L/CHEM 1212/L sequence
      • Area F: BIOL 2120K – A&P I, BIOL 2130K – A&P II, BIOL 2500/L - Microbiology, MATH 1401 - Statistics, One Guided Elective: PSYC 1101, or SOCI 1101, or PSYC 2103 (recommended)
      • All required sciences must be completed within the previous 5 years, from the term of application. Expired science courses will not be accepted and will need to be repeated.
    • Transferring into the BSN Program from Outside UNG
      • Transfer students must apply to the university and be unconditionally accepted, prior to applying to the BSN program.
      • UNG must receive your completed application for admission and all supporting documents prior to the deadline.
      • All transfer students are required to attend a transfer student orientation after acceptance.
      • Due to the high volume of pre-nursing student inquiries, we are not able to meet individually with students until they are enrolled.
      • We ask that transfer students register online and participate in one of the following virtual BSN Information Sessions.
        • Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. - Virtually - Zoom
        • Thursday, April 27, 2023, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. - Virtually - Zoom

    What The Traditional Journey Could Look Like

    Your First Year

    • You'll start to find your place on campus and begin your core classes in English, math, science, history and chemistry.
    • Attend one of our nursing advisement and info sessions to learn about applying to the nursing program.

    Sophomore Year

    • You'll finish up your prerequisite core courses.
    • This will be the year you apply to the BSN program. Admission is competitive and is based on your GPA and HESI test score.

    Junior Year

    • Once you've been accepted into the program, you'll celebrate by buying your official UNG Nursing scrubs and lab kit.
    • You'll learn the fundamentals of nursing practice, including health assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacology

    Senior Year

    • You'll study specialized topics in nursing, including obstetrics, pediatrics, mental health and population health.
    • As you prepare to graduate from UNG, you'll also be preparing to take the NCLEX exam to earn your professional licensure.
