Writing Your Cover Letter in Five Steps

    Step 1 – The Technicalities

    • Keep your cover letter to one page
    • Avoid, “To Whom it May Concern”; address to a hiring manager if you can
    • Use a business letter format
    • Write short paragraphs

Step 2 – Make a targeted list of companies where you would like to work

    Research the companies

    • Find out the types of jobs.
    • What are their products/services?
    • What is their mission/values?
    • Research news about the company.
    • Carefully read the job announcement.

Step 3 – The Opening Paragraph

This is where your research helps! Explain why you’re interested in working there. Explain how your skills meet their needs.

Step 4 – The Second Paragraph

Mention your top accomplishments. Write about your experiences that relate to the position.

    Step 5 – The Closing

Invite the hiring manager to contact you for an interview.

Thank the employer for their time and consideration.

    Sincerely, Your name
