Music Major with Choral Music Education Concentration (B.M.)

The UNG music department offers a Bachelor of Music with a major in music and a concentration in choral music education. The unique appeal of the music education program lies in the supportive relationships formed within the UNG music department, which brings performers and educators together in a community of practice.

Throughout their participation in the program, students will build a portfolio of high-quality music, materials, and lessons in preparation for student teaching. Students will gain practical experience through peer-to-peer instruction, while observations in the field will help them to develop strategies and best practices in music education.

The training that students receive at the UNG Department of Music puts you on a path of excellence that leads to a professional career as a music educator. You do need not be a perfect performer or solo instrumentalist, but with motivation and a great work ethic, you will become the inspiration and model musician and educator.

If you have a passion for music and a love for teaching, be a leader in music education at UNG!

    Junior Year

At this point, you will take specialized courses in choral and instrumental music education and methods, learning the fundamentals of teaching in and running a music program. In addition, you will be preparing to offer your Junior recital demonstrating your growth as a musician and performer.

    Senior Year

During this year, you will take the senior capstone courses where you refine your philosophy of teaching and curriculum. You will complete a part-time Fall internship and Spring full-time internship in area school music programs with a cooperating teacher. By the end of your Spring teaching placement, you will complete the necessary steps to be a Georgia certified music teacher.

    At Graduation

You will have the background and skills necessary to begin a career as a music educator specializing in choral or general music but with the skills necessary to work with an instrumental program. You will be versed in the skills necessary to lead a classroom and a rehearsal and build a comprehensive music program.
