Campus Operations Overview

As weather conditions continue to improve, the University of North Georgia is providing the following operational update:

Tuesday, January 27:

The university will operate with asynchronous virtual instruction and remote work. Because some areas may still experience lingering power or internet disruptions, flexibility is encouraged. Faculty should use discretion when delivering instruction virtually and should be mindful of student access and circumstances.

Wednesday, January 28:

The university will return to normal operations across all campuses, including in-person classes, events, and regular office hours.

Limited Services - Dahlonega Campus Only

The following limited services will continue to operate Monday and Tuesday:

Dining Operations
- Monday – Tuesday: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Recreation Center
- Monday–Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Hoag Student Center
- Monday–Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Monday, January 26
Who should report to campus during the campus closure?

Essential personnel, per direction from their supervisor. These roles may include Public Safety, Facilities, and Residence Life, and are necessary to ensure the operation of essential functions on campus during the closure.

Non-essential personnel should not come to campus during the closure.

 How do bi-weekly essential employees record time worked during the campus closure?

Employees: Record actual time worked as usual in OneUSG.

Supervisors: Update the time reporting code to reflect Inclement Weather, before timesheet approval on Friday, 1/30/26.

Compensation: Employees who are required to work these two days will be paid for time worked plus inclement weather closure time, i.e., the regularly scheduled shift that occurs during the campus closure.

 How do monthly essential employees track time during the campus closure?

Employees: No action is required for reporting time in OneUSG.

Supervisors: When feasible, provide flex-time opportunities to employees who work during the campus closure.

 When does the Inclement Weather closure status begin? 

6 a.m. on Saturday, 1/24/26.

Tuesday, January 27
As of 1/24/26, the university is preparing to operate with reduced operations on Tuesday, 1/27/26. The university will shift to a virtual learning environment, with offices open remotely. A full return to campus is anticipated on Wednesday, January 28th, pending continued assessment of conditions.

Who should report to campus during reduced operations?

Only essential personnel should report on-site, per direction from their supervisor. These roles may include Public Safety, Facilities, and Residence Life, and are necessary to ensure the operation of essential functions on campus during the closure.

Non-essential personnel should not come to campus during the reduced operations.

Who should work from home on Tuesday in the reduced operations and virtual environment?

Employees should plan to work remotely on Tuesday, if feasible based on the job duties.

Managers should communicate with their employees regarding expectations for remote work during this time.

Widespread power and internet outages are possible and will impact capabilities for remote work on Tuesday. UNG leadership, with guidance from Public Safety, Facilities, and GEMA, will actively monitor conditions throughout the weekend.  Extended closures may be necessary if widespread outages occur.  Additional updates will be provided on Sunday and each day as necessary.

How will pay be impacted for employees who cannot work remotely, based on job duties or localized power outages?

The University recognizes that not all positions can be performed remotely and that employees may experience power or internet disruptions. When these circumstances prevent an employee from performing their duties, it is not the University’s intent to require the use of leave or reduce pay. 

Employees are expected to work as scheduled when able and to communicate promptly with their supervisor regarding any limitations. Supervisors will work with employees to determine appropriate work options or duty status based on operational needs and individual circumstances. 

How will future updates be communicated?

Updates to campus closures or delays in opening times will be shared via email, this page, UNG Emergency Alerts, and UNG's Facebook account. Please ensure your information is up to date in Banner and within the LiveSafe App:

We are especially grateful to our Facilities, Dining Services, Residence Life, Public Safety, and Information Technology teams, who worked to maintain campus operations, support system connectivity, and ensure the comfort and safety of students who remained on campus.

Inclement weather communications protocol

Please note that in the event of inclement weather that causes a campus closure or delayed opening, an announcement will be distributed first through the university’s Emergency Notification System. In the event of emergencies, closures or delayed openings, this system will provide important information regarding university operations or emergency actions.

If you need to update your contact information for the Emergency Notification System, please use the Banner Information System, contact the emergency preparedness coordinator in the Office of Public Safety, or email publicsafety@ung.edu for assistance.

Inclement weather notifications are likely to be segmented by campus location, as weather conditions may vary widely in the university’s five-campus area.

Should a campus be closed or delay opening due to weather conditions, an announcement will be published by 6:30 a.m. Essential personnel (identified in advance by their supervisors) would need to report as soon as they are able to safely do so. Non-essential personnel and students who do not reside on campus should refrain from coming to campus to avoid placing unnecessary demand on public safety and plant operations staff.

When campuses return to normal operations, students, staff and faculty should always use their best judgment about traveling depending upon road conditions in their area.

The Division of Strategic Communications & Marketing will also disseminate information through local media outlets.
