Aliou Aboubakar Mouhamed took his creativity to a larger stage when he competed in the inaugural University System of Georgia (USG) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition April 6-7 at Kennesaw State University's Marietta Campus. While the University of North Georgia (UNG) student didn't advance to the final six, he gained valuable feedback from judges and saw UNG's supportive ecosystem in action as his faculty members, UNG President Michael Shannon and UNG staff encouraged him.

"I vividly remember coming off the stage after my pitch, and my entire team was there waiting for me with big smiles. That moment was phenomenal," Aboubakar Mouhamed said. "I couldn't have asked for more, and it meant so much to see them take the time to support me. This is what the UNG faculty and staff stand for: students first. I felt that even more during those two days."

Aboubakar Mouhamed's innovative inspiration began when he was frustrated by the repetitive nature of job applications and created Zapp, an app that uses artificial intelligence to tailor resumes and cover letters to job postings and allows users to apply for jobs in seconds rather than 20 minutes or more.

He is in UNG's Master of Science in computer science program after earning a bachelor's degree in computer science in the fall, and he advanced to the state event after a second-place finish in the innovateUNG Pitch Challenge.

"Ali did an outstanding job representing UNG at 2026 USG Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The experience was incredibly valuable. Events like this are an opportunity to test your idea, gather real-time feedback and build meaningful connections," said Dr. Mariangela Vecchiarini-Piazza, an associate professor of entrepreneurship in the Mike Cottrell College of Business. "It was especially exciting to see the level of interest in his venture, with many attendees scanning his QR code and signing up for the app on the spot. That kind of engagement speaks volumes. We're very proud of Ali and how he represented our university with professionalism, confidence and enthusiasm."

Students from all 25 USG schools competed in the event, with some presenting on April 6 and others on April 7. The final six competitors were announced around noon April 7 before the finals were held that afternoon. Georgia Tech student Akos Vida won the event.

"It was truly amazing to compete alongside the bright minds of the beautiful state of Georgia. This experience allowed me to gain different perspectives and see what other students and schools are working on. The feedback was great, and I always learn something new when surrounded by so many people," Aboubakar Mouhamed said. "This experience helped me learn about myself and how I approach adversity. Getting to that point is never easy, but it is definitely rewarding. I know this will strengthen my resilience and help me grow exponentially. I loved the entire concept and thank the USG for giving us the opportunity to showcase ourselves and for their support. As I like to say, there’s more to come."
