UNG Public Safety officers are the first responders on campus for emergencies. Emergency assistance may be obtained 24 hours a day by contacting Public Safety at 706-864-1500.
Evacuation of Building
Before an emergency occurs, students who require assistance should identify someone in each class who can assist them in the event of an evacuation.
When there is a fire, or another emergency requiring evacuation, individuals with disabilities who cannot leave by way of the stairs will go to the nearest stairwell.
Student should use a cell phone to call campus Public Safety so that Public Safety can alert emergency personnel as to where they are.
It is standard operating procedure for emergency personnel to check the stairwells first.
Public Safety, with the assistance of the coordinator for the building, will ensure that everyone is out of the building.
Communication in an Emergency
Individual with a visual impairment
Announce the type of emergency and offer your arm for guidance.
Tell the person where you are going, and ask if further help is needed once you reach safety.
Individual with a hearing impairment
Turn lights on/off to gain the person’s attention, if needed.
Indicate directions with gestures, or write a note with evacuation directions, and assist to safety as needed.
Medical Emergencies in the Classroom
Students may experience a medical emergency in the classroom (such as a seizure, diabetic hypoglycemia, or a cardiac-related incident)
Students who are concerned that a medical emergency may occur during class are encouraged to obtain a letter from their physician to give to their professors. The letter should provide information on the nature of the disability-related emergency and instructions for emergency service providers.
