Founder and CEO of The Green Notebook, Joe Byerly

Joe Byerly is a graduate of the University of North Georgia Corps of Cadets.

I’m passionate about leader development and want to help others to lead with the best version of themselves. I created this site to provide a platform for leaders to help each other by sharing lessons learned. Lessons that come from our own green notebooks.

I’m a combat arms officer with over 17 years of experience in combat and training environments and a Non-Resident Fellow with the Modern War Institute. I have been fortunate to have mentors who encouraged me to read, write, and publish throughout my career. I’ve published articles in ARMY Magazine, Military ReviewStrategy BridgeSmall Wars JournalTask and PurposeForeign Policy, and many others. I’ve also been featured on Forbes, have been lucky enough to talk about leadership on several podcasts, and have spoken at the Annual AUSA Conference, the Future of War Conference, and Defense Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference.

Founder and Director of 3x5 Leadership, Joshua C. Bowen

I am passionate about making people and organizations better through leader development. The Army has afforded me opportunities to do that as an engineer officer for the past 11 years so far, which have led to some of the most transformative experiences of my life.

Additionally, I continue to achieve this passion through 3x5 Leadership, which is a hub of resources for leader- and self-development.

General Colin Powell

General Colin Powell, the first Black US Secretary of State and Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away on 18 October 2021. General Powell was a first generation college student, a graduate of Army ROTC, and was regarded around the world as a highly ethical and transformational leader. Alongside our nation, we are saddened by the loss.

A poignant reminder of General Powell’s legacy of leadership is General Powell’s 18 leadership tips (PDF) from the late 1990s or early 2000s for leaders to consider.
