Bella Mathis

Communications Major Gwinnett Technical College, Event Coordinator

How did you hear about your internship?

I had just gotten my role as the event coordinator for GTC when I learned I could also use it as an internship credit. My role within our communications department has provided me with valuable insight into real-world scenarios involving marketing, social media, graphic design, and, of course, event coordination. Under my supervisor, I was able to apply concepts I had learned in the classroom as tools to effectively lead, plan, and execute successful events for Gwinnett Tech. I now have valuable practical applications of the knowledge I gained at UNG, as well as the skills I’ve acquired since taking on this role.

What has been the most valuable (or favorite) part of the experience?

One of the favorite parts of this experience has been successfully executing big events for the President’s office, such as running graduation – both tech ed and HSE (we’ve now added a fall ceremony!), our employee training days, and seeing the payout of a successful event! Especially at graduation, watching all those students walk across and feel their accomplishment. I don’t think that without the skills I’ve learned on the job as well as in my comms classes, I could have yielded that kind of result.

How will this help you in the future?

It will definitely help me keep my foot in the door for a career in higher education. I’m unsure if events are what I want to do for my career, but I think this internship has solidified my love for higher education and my desire to work within TCSG or USG schools. I’m excited for wherever my path may take me!
