What Your Journey Could Look Like

    Your First Year

Along with the core curriculum courses, you will begin taking courses in Spanish. Depending on your exposure to Spanish, you may begin taking foundational, intermediate, or upper division course. Use our Spanish Course Recommendations for additional guidance.

A professional academic advisor can help with your plan of study and present opportunities that will complement your growing language skills.

    Sophomore Year

You will complete SPAN 2001 and 2002 in the fall and spring, respectively. You will learn more complex grammatical structures and engage in communication. Activities in these classes will serve as a springboard to the content courses they will take in their junior and senior years.

Upon completion of the intermediate level classes, students may also attend one of our study abroad offerings in Spain or Peru. You may also take courses on literature and culture. Once you complete the this sequence which can be done in one semester now, a wide array of options opens up for you.

All language majors are required to take an additional language so right around here you would start taking your third language at the 1001 and 1002 level.

    Junior Year

Here comes the fun! You can enroll in courses like: Introduction to translation, Culture and Civilization of Latin America, Mexican Culture, Conversation classes, linguistics, poetry and other forms of literary expression.

You may also choose to enroll in courses in translation and advanced grammar and composition, as well as advanced conversation. Somewhere in the middle of that we will encourage you to go in one of our summer Education Abroad Programs to either Spain or Peru.

    Senior Year

By your senior year you have honed in what you are more interested in so you will choose either more courses geared to the professions, linguistics or culture and literature.

As you work on these courses you will likely be encouraged to participate in an internship, or a research practicum if you are interested in graduate school.

During the senior year, Spanish Literature majors will take special topics courses that will help to refine their knowledge of specific literary periods and genres. Students will be expected to write research papers in Spanish.

    • Defense Language Institute for Cadets

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the Department of Military Science offer students in the Corps of Cadets who are attached to a reserve unit the unique opportunity to combine course work at the university with study at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California, in order to fulfill the Bachelor’s degree requirements while training as military linguists.

*These students will receive an associates degree upon completion of language course work at the DLI. On returning to North Georgia, students will maintain and enhance the language skills acquired at the DLI via distance learning and will complete a Spanish major for the bachelor’s degree, including any remaining core curriculum requirements needed.

*Admission to North Georgia and to the Corps of Cadets does not guarantee acceptance to DLI language study. The DLI controls its own admission policy and sets its own quota each admission period. Part of the admission requirements to the DLI involves making an appropriate score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).
