Below is a comprehensive, suggested packing list to help you prepare for camp. Do you need everything on this list? No, you don’t. However, there is a use for each item listed.
Bring clothes, bedding (sleeping bag or sheets and comforter), pillow, towels, toiletries. Beds are standard twin size. An extra blanket and/or warm PJs may be helpful as the air conditioning works quite well.
Bring basic school day supplies such as a scientific calculator, pens, pencils, notebook, paper, backpack, and so forth. Bring your copy of Ender’s Game and any notes you took while reading it.
Bring outdoor needs like a water bottle and sunglasses. Don’t forget bug spray, sunscreen and ball cap.
Bring laundry supplies. You will need detergent and dryer sheets, but the dorm washers and dryers are free.
Bring a beach towel for use at the pool party or tubing at Pine Valley, and towels and shower shoes for use in the bathroom.
Bring a cell phone that can double as an alarm clock. Don’t forget the charger!
Personal electronics are allowed including tablets, laptops and speakers for iPod's or MP3 players. However, the University of North Georgia and the Summer Honors Program are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items.
Bring spending money for trips to Dairy Queen, the university gift shop and for souvenirs on the historic Dahlonega Square. Between $50 and $100 is suggested, but either more or less is fine.
Bring money for a tee shirt. We use camp shirt sales as a fundraiser benefiting our scholarship fund. Tee shirts look great and cost $15 total, with $5 from each purchase benefiting deserving students who wish to attend Summer Honors.
Bring $20 in cash for a security deposit. Your $20 deposit will be returned in full provided you return your key card and no damage is caused to the dorm room or facilities during your stay.
Clothes Needed
Academic
Academic attire should be nice yet casual. The official dress code for academic sessions is slacks or nice jeans (no holes, ragged edges, etc) and collared shirt for males; females may wear slacks, Capri pants, skirts or nice jeans (no mini-skirts), and collared shirt, blouse or nice t-shirt (no concert tees or t-shirts with writing). Nice clothes should be included for church (optional attendance), the Etiquette Dinner and the Awards Night Banquet.
Activity
Activity attire should include closed-toe shoes and loose, comfortable clothes. T-shirt and shorts suggested. Longer shorts are more comfortable with climbing harness. Bring sports attire for frisbee, swimming, tubing, and other games and leisure activities. Rock climbing is easiest when wearing a good pair of basketball or tennis shoes. You want shoes with lots of friction (traction). No FiveFinger shoes are allowed for ropes course activities or at Mt. Yonah.
Dorm
Dorm attire should include modest clothes for nighttime trips to restrooms. Long sleeves, PJ's or sweat pants can be helpful as the dorm room air conditioning works - sometimes, a bit too well. Male and female campers will be housed on separate floors. Both male and female camp staff may patrol the hallway areas on both floors. No opposite sex counselor will enter a camper's dorm room or restroom except in the case of an emergency.
What Not Bring
The University of North Georgia and the Summer Honors Program are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. Please do not bring valuable or fragile items such as expensive jewelry.
The following items are specifically prohibited:
Refrigerators
Televisions/stereos
Electronic game systems (X-Box, etc)
Possession of alcohol, illegal drugs or tobacco products
Will result in immediate dismissal from Summer Honors.
