Academic Affairs offers on an introductory online workshop for those new to leadership at UNG. The basis for the course is the University System of Georgia’s annual workshop for new leaders and has been augmented with UNG specific information. Both the USG and UNG information will help you in day-to-day operations of your unit. This online workshop was written by Michael Rogers, retired Assistant Vice Chancellor of the USG and current UNG Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Mary Carney, former Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership. Many offices at the USG and UNG contributed. Former Provost Tom Ormond and Provost Chaudron Gille have reviewed and approved the workshop. DETI has given it the seal of Quality Matters and been instrumental in its creation.
The main topic areas are as follows:

Intended to bring together new and established leaders from across UNG, the Staff Leadership Development Program offers a year-long introduction to the theories, skills, and knowledge of leadership. Specifically designed for UNG leaders from across the university, the program runs from September to April; cohorts are chosen in spring semester. For more information, see the Staff Leadership Development site.
Each year the University System of Georgia invites institutions to send a cohort of leaders to this one-day workshop. Each fall, the UNG Provost identifies new leaders, and invitations are sent. The event is usually held in January or February.
The USG email announcement states: "Designed for new or relatively new college, division, or department academic leaders, this workshop is designed to address important topics and initiatives across the University System of Georgia. The workshop will discuss system-wide governance and operations as well as strategic initiatives that should inform your role at your campus. We will also cover Board of Regents policies that every academic leader should know (i.e., policies related to academic programs and faculty) and present some suggestions for effective policies and procedures at the campus level. Participants will have a chance to network with their peers from across the USG and engage in some hands-on activities to practice the application of policies to real-world examples.” More than 20 UNG leaders have participated over the years at this annual retreat.
The New Chairs Workshop Series will be offered as a one-year community to support department chairs who have been in administrative positions three years or less. See the New Chairs Workshop Series page for more information.
