Film & Digital Media Major with Production Concentration (B.S.)

Film & Digital Media majors who concentrate in production experience a hands-on program that provides students with an understanding of motion pictures as a form of expression, experience in all phases of the production process, and awareness of how to succeed in the industry.

The program of study requires students to become competent in all aspects of production as well as to develop expertise in a specialization, such as directing, screenwriting, producing, editing, cinematography, audio production, or creating digital effects. 

Graduates will be ready to step directly into the workforce producing their own creative content, working on major film and television productions, or making independent films. The major is also excellent preparation for a graduate program.

UNG's production facilities and equipment are among the best in the region. The program's new studio space facilitates every aspect of production from concept to distribution. This 21,000 square foot facility features:

What Your Journey Could Look Like

Your First Year

Get in your academic groove with core classes like english Composition, math, science and a modern language. Find your place on campus and join a club using UNG Connect like the Student Film Association or get involved with the Georgia Film Festival.

Begin your major study by taking Film Appreciation and learn how to get started in the business by taking the Seminar on the Film & Digital Media industry.

Your Sophomore Year

Get your first hands-on experience in Production I and write your first screenplay in Writing for Media. Get on-set as much as possible by volunteering in various departments on other student films.

Working as a Production Assistant will help you gain knowledge and experience as you discover your individual passion in the industry.

Your Junior Year

You will dive deeper into every phase of the production process and finding your voice.

  • Write that award winning screenplay
  • Learn to edit engaging stories
  • Direct a short film and get it into festivals 

As you are now deep into your studies, begin preparing for your Senior Capstone project and think about how it can best serve your future career. Find your people, the fellow majors who speak your creative language. Apply for an internship

Your Senior Year

By now, you should have started building an impressive portfolio of work. Be sure to begin submitting to film festivals and competitions nationally and all over the world. Don’t forget to submit to our own Georgia Film Festival!

You will take all you have learned and create your Senior Capstone. Maybe you’re directing your own short film, producing a webseries, or building your resume as a Screenwriter, Director of Photographer or Editor. Whichever path you choose, be sure to work hard as this will be your first step into the professional industry.

Experience the Film & Digital Media Major

In the past 5 years alone, UNG’s Film & Digital Media production faculty have directed, written, or produced over 15 feature films, 15 short films, and one screenwriting textbook.

We host the annual Georgia Film Festival (GFF) on the Gainesville campus. GFF celebrates filmmakers & films based in the state of Georgia and the southeast and provides a showcase for the best films made each year by UNG students. 

Our program is a member of the Georgia Film Consortium. This allows you to take courses from the Georgia Film Academy, an initiative developed by Georgia state leadership to meet education and workforce needs for high-demand careers in Georgia's film and creative industries. Georgia is home to some of the most expansive productions in the film and television industry today, supporting more than 92,000 local jobs!
