    Secondary Education Major with a Physics Concentration (B.S.)

    In addition to our undergraduate program, there are alternate routes to physics secondary education certification at the University of North Georgia (UNG). The Post-Baccalaureate Initial Teacher Certification program allows those with an undergraduate degree to earn their initial teacher certification and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for individuals who possess degrees in majors other than education and wish to become initially certified in teaching fields comparable to their undergraduate degrees. (The MAT certification with a concentration in Secondary Education – Biology is not available at UNG).

    • Admission Requirements

      To be eligible for admission to the teacher certification program, a student must:

      1. Complete 80 semester hours of credit with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher
      2. Complete EDUC 2110, 2120, and EDUC 2130 with a grade of "C" or better
      3. Complete all courses in Area A of the core curriculum with a grade of "C" or better
      4. Complete a Plan of study
      5. Proof of successful completion or exemption of GACE program admissions test
        • You may exempt GACE program admissions test if you can provide proof of any of the following
          • SAT minimum score 1000 combined Verbal/Critical Reading and Math for tests taken prior to July 1, 2019
          • SAT minimum score 1080 combined Evidence Based Reading/Writing and Math for tests taken on or after July 1, 2019
        • A copy of your SAT, ACT, or GACE Program Admissions score report is REQUIRED with your application. See our FAQ page for additional information.
        • Transfer students must supply an official copy of test scores (SAT, ACT, or GACE Program Admissions).
      6. Complete an application for admission to the teacher certification program. Application deadline is posted on the department Web page
      7. Agree to request a criminal background check

      The University of North Georgia (UNG) College of Education provides multiple opportunities for students to study abroad while pursuing their education degree. All current opportunities are for seniors in their final spring internship.

    What Could Your Journey Look Like?

    First Year

    • First-year students take core classes which will provide a solid foundation for further study.
    • Get involved in student government, or after your first semester, explore fraternity and sorority life.   

    Sophomore & Junior Years

    • Become eligible to apply to the College of Education.
    • You'll get more classroom experience with a 60 hour practicum in your junior year.
    • Sophomores and juniors typically take introductory education courses before determining which content areas to focus on. Once a content area or areas are chosen, you will focus more heavily on courses in those disciplines.

    Senior Year

    • Seniors take specialized secondary education courses.
    • UNG's student teaching experience is one of the most immersive in the state and students will spend over 800 hours getting real classroom experience before they graduate.
