The Impact of the Dr. Barry Friedman Scholarship
Every academic year, through the generosity of members of the PSIA family, a Political Science, International Affairs, or Strategic & Security Studies undergraduate student receives a $1000 grant toward UNG-related educational expenses in honor of Professor Emeritus Dr. Barry Friedman. Being selected as a recipient of this scholarship is a great honor, as previously shared by past recipients Victoria Landa, IA '24; Fatima Santillan, PS/Pre-Law ‘25; and Jordan Barrocas, SSST ‘26. This sentiment continues with Fadi Ghazal (PS ’27) who has expressed immense gratitude for this award and how it helped with tuition and material costs so he could focus on his studies, prepare for the LSAT, and prepare to attend law school.
Receiving the Dr. Barry Friedman Scholarship can have a tremendous impact on both a student’s collegiate and career experience. Fadi illustrates this by acknowledging that the scholarship has provided not only financial assistance but also support and recognition from UNG professors and other students: “This scholarship is something I feel like I had to work for, both in my grades and involvement around campus, and it is a representation of the hard work I've put in here at UNG.” Fadi reflects that this recognition motivated him to continue working hard throughout his college career: “This scholarship has given me something to distinguish me in future employment opportunities.”
Looking toward the next Friedman Scholarship application cycle in Spring 2027, Fadi encourages students who are considering applying for this scholarship to simply try: “Some may doubt themselves and feel as if they aren't ready, or they aren't good enough of a student - but there is never a reason not to submit the application and give it a try. You might be as surprised as I was to be the recipient. And this goes for everything in life.”
