Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS)
Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (or BASICS) is a harm-reduction educational program that is designed to reduce risks associated with harmful alcohol consumption.
BASICS is neither a pro-drinking nor an anti-drinking program, but instead provides evidence-based information to students so that they can make informed decisions about their use of alcohol.

Sessions
BASICS consists of two one-on-one appointments with a BASICS facilitator. Each session lasts approximately one to 1.5 hours in length. It is a non-judgmental and non-confrontational program that respects autonomy or personal choice.
- During the first session, you will meet with a BASICS facilitator to answer a few questions about your use of alcohol, your goals, values, and past experiences. You will then complete a confidential online assessment that generates visual feedback about your use of alcohol.
- During the second session, the facilitator will review your assessment with you to help you understand your personal risks associated with alcohol use. You and your facilitator will work together to explore ways that you can lower your alcohol-related risks.
Information Sharing
This is a confidential program and the information you share about your alcohol use with remain with your facilitator. You are free to share as little or as much as you like. Ultimately the more accurate information you can provide, the more useful the program will be for you.
A letter of completion will be given after the program is finished. No personal information about the things you discuss in session will be shared along with this letter of completion.
It should be noted that there are a few exceptions to confidentiality. These exceptions will be reviewed with you during your first session.
Cost and Fees
Students who are required to complete BASICS due to a conduct violation will be charged $100 for the program. The fee helps to cover the costs of the program.
Students who are not mandated to complete the program but who would like to complete BASICS out of their own personal interest can do so at no cost.
No Shows
There is a $100 fee for no-shows. If you cannot make it to your appointment, then please reach out to your BASICS facilitator to avoid being charged a fee.
Holds
If you are mandated to complete BASICS, a hold will be placed on your account until you have paid the fee and completed the program. Upon completion, a letter will be given to the university official that assigned the program to you.
Note: It is important that you schedule your BASICS session well ahead of your completion deadline so that your administrative hold can be removed prior to class registration deadline. Certain times of the year are busier than others and you may not get scheduled as quickly as you would like.
