The Department of Theatre at the University of North Georgia (UNG) is part of a one-of-a-kind, nationally recognized departmental collaboration with Brenau University called Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA). Emphasizing ensemble and collaboration between programs, GTA’s cross-university union supports an extraordinary production program rivaling the largest theatre schools in the country.
Our top-notch professional educators utilize hands-on, individualized training in our state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, and ensure an undergraduate experience full of opportunity. Our close proximity to Atlanta makes for abundant professional opportunities (in both theatre and film) right in our backyard. Connecting an exciting, robust, and challenging curriculum with a storied production program that has packed our theatre houses for over forty years, GTA is one of the leading theatre training programs in the Southeast.
Admission into GTA is highly competitive. All Theatre B.F.A. programs (Acting, Musical Theatre, Theatre Design & Technology) accept 12 students per academic year, while the B.A. Theatre program is capped at 20 students per year. Admission to all programs is by audition or interview only. B.F.A. Acting, B.F.A. Musical Theatre, and B.A. Theatre students can begin their collegiate career at UNG through the Theatre Pathway (A.A.) before transferring to Brenau to complete the bachelor degree.
Students must be accepted into the institution they plan to attend (either Brenau University or UNG) before final acceptance into the theatre degree program of choice. Theatre Scholarships in all programs are awarded to students based on talent, commitment, and academic performance.
All students must apply through the GTA application portal and audition or interview in person at one of the three audition events held throughout the academic year. In special circumstances, students may be admitted via audition/interview at select theatre conferences or audition events, such as the College Audition Project (CAP) United Auditions, South Eastern Theatre Conference (SETC), ThesCon, or Georgia Theatre Conference.
GTA enjoys a healthy partnership with the quickly growing Film program at UNG. Our students work interchangeably with the film students as actors, art directors, designers, scenic artists, gaffers, and in a myriad of other positions. Further certification opportunities are available through UNG’s membership in the Georgia Film Consortium.
