Staff Leadership Development Program
USG New Deans and Department Heads Retreat
The USG email announcement states: "Designed for new or relatively new college, division, or department academic leaders, this workshop is designed to address important topics and initiatives across the University System of Georgia. The workshop will discuss system-wide governance and operations as well as strategic initiatives that should inform your role at your campus. We will also cover Board of Regents policies that every academic leader should know (i.e., policies related to academic programs and faculty) and present some suggestions for effective policies and procedures at the campus level. Participants will have a chance to network with their peers from across the USG and engage in some hands-on activities to practice the application of policies to real-world examples.” More than 20 UNG leaders have participated over the years at this annual retreat.
New Chairs Workshop Series
The New Chairs Workshop Series will be offered as a one-year community to support department chairs who have been in administrative positions three years or less. Participants will gather for three meetings during the fall and three meetings during the spring to discuss administrative issues including:
- Budget management and fiscal concerns
- Mentoring faculty and documenting teaching excellence
- Preparing faculty for the annual review
- Considering ethics in leadership positions
- Navigating conflict resolution and student complaints, and
- Preparing faculty for promotion and tenure
The series seeks to foster a common cultural dialogue of leadership at the University of North Georgia, and is open to all department chairs.
