    Managed Print

Managed Print was identified as an opportunity to save the institution and its students money.

The Managed Print initiative seeks to reduce waste, increase efficiency, create accountability, facilitate metrics collection/reporting and offer improved features and functionality by creating a unified managed print system that will meet the needs and expectations of students, faculty and staff across all UNG campuses.

    Student Printing

    • What's changing?

You will be able to print from any computer on campus and “release” your documents at any printer on campus by swiping your UNG ID card.

    • What is a print release?

Once you’ve sent a file to be printed, simply walk up to any print release station and swipe your UNG ID card to gain access to the files you have waiting to be printed. Select your file name, and release to print.

    • Why is it changing?

Better security – Often times students print files and forget to retrieve them from the printer or print too many pages mistake. By adding print release functionality, you can select what pages to print and when to print them while you’re at the printer.

Reduced waste – It’s estimated that 12% of print jobs result in wasted paper due to printing in error or forgetting to pick up the documents. Print release will help cut down on waste by allowing for more control over what you choose to print and when.

Saving resources – Students printed 4.2 million pages in 2019. If we use the 12% estimate on counting waste, we’d save over 500,000 sheets of paper just by implementing the print release functionality!

    • When is this changing?

Devices and software are now in use.

    • Managed Print

UNG's President’s Committee for Sustainability together with Information Technology (IT) Services rolled out a new managed print program in summer 2021.

As indicated in the UNG Comprehensive Administrative Review report, historical data indicates that the university spends about $588,000 per year on printing. With the managed print system, we are looking at potential savings of more than $200,000, some of which could be directed to other student services.

Managed print went live in fall of 2021 for all student accounts.

Faculty and staff are scheduled to start using managed print near the end of 2021. They will have the same features as students. Eventually, managed print will lead to a decrease in desktop printers.

The switch to a managed print system will save the university money and allow us to be more environmentally friendly.

Additionally, information will be provided as the program gets closer to a full launch.

      Sincerely,

Ken Crowe and Dr. Jeffrey Landgren
Co-chairs of the President’s Committee on Sustainability
