Special Library Privileges
Loan Periods
UNG book materials that graduate students check out are due at the end of each term.Access to the Library Collections and Databases when not Enrolled
Students in a graduate program, but not enrolled in classes for the current semester are eligible for graduate level library privileges. These include borrowing from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan and GIL Express. These students are also able to access library databases off campus. Library technology checkout is excluded. In order to receive this privilege, students must complete an Unenrolled and Affiliate Borrowing Privileges Request Form (PDF), including all necessary signatures, verifying participation in the program and the need for library privileges. Once this form is returned to the Access Services Department in the library, students are able to check out books. Students must submit a new form each term borrowing privileges are needed.

Placing Theses, Publications and Papers into the Institutional Repository (NOIR)
Students are encouraged to share their research with the scholarly community by placing their theses in the UNG institutional repository, NOIR (Nighthawks Open Institutional Repository). The UNG Graduate Catalog’s thesis option includes information about format and submission guidelines for depositing theses in NOIR. As stated in the catalog, students should also contact their academic advisor for guidance regarding guidelines and policies specific to the thesis option for their graduate degree program.
In addition to theses, students may wish to submit presentations, papers and publications (if permitted by the publisher) for inclusion in the repository. Guidelines for these are in the thesis option section of the Graduate Catalog.
In submitting works to an institutional repository, there are frequently copyright and Creative Commons Licensing questions which should be addressed by the author (the student), including what, if any, limitations will be made on access to the work through the repository. The UNG Library’s Special Collections and Digital Initiatives Librarian can provide assistance with copyright and Creative Commons licensing for works submitted to the repository. See the UNG Open Access Permissions Form-PDF (requires UNG login) for more information.

Assistance with Library Resources for Research
For help with using library resources or other issues special to graduate research, like finding data sets, using Interlibrary Loan or working with citation management tools, graduate students may schedule a one-on-one appointment with a librarian for extensive, in-depth research assistance.
We will do our best to match you with a librarian who has some expertise in the subject area of your research. We require at least 48 hours’ notice (not including weekends) for all appointments.
Librarians Barbara Petersohn and Kristine Stilwell specialize in graduate students’ needs.
