Derek Powers
Where do you work, and what do you do in your current occupation?
I currently work at the University of North Georgia (UNG) as a Marketing/Graphic Design Specialist in the Office of Professional and Continuing Education.
What do you enjoy about your current to occupation? Do you consider yourself successful? In what way?
I love where I work and my office is like family. I consider myself successful in that I am doing what I love to do and what I studied to become. But, I also have bigger dreams and currently pursuing my Master of Public Administration degree. I am by no means finished, but I am content with where I am today.
What led you to pursue your current line of work?
I love the art of visual communication and after graduating I applied for jobs involving graphic design. It just so happened I found a part-time job at UNG's Gainesville Campus, formerly Gainesville State College, which eventually led to a full-time offer and I've been here ever since.
Do the skills and knowledge that you gained as a student in the Department of Visual Arts (DoVA) contribute to your current occupation? If so, in what way?
I do believe the skills and knowledge I gained in DoVA contributed to my professional career. My professors were all passionate about teaching and they were big on us mastering the fundamentals. They allowed us to grow as artists and set us up to be ready for the next step whether pursuance of an advanced degree or beginning a career.
Now that you have a vantage point to reflect on your art education, what would you do differently?
I wouldn't do anything differently. Life is about learning and failure builds character. Learning from failure has taught me more than any success ever will.
Do you have any words of wisdom for current DoVA students?
No matter where life takes you, if you have this passion find a way to keep making art and sharing your gift with others.
