Academic Advising Fundamentals

This year-long workshop series will focus on undergraduate academic advising at UNG. It will provide a larger-picture overview of academic advising at UNG, as well as more in-depth study on specific advising topics like advising technology, curriculum, and academic policies and advising processes. These workshops are directed toward faculty who engage in undergraduate academic advising but are open to all staff and faculty.

Certificates

Faculty may earn a certificate for completing various program requirements. The certificate can be shared as an artifact in the promotion and tenure portfolio. In order to qualify for a program certificate, Academic Advising participants must attend a minimum of six of the eight sessions offered during the academic year.

Academic Advising at UNG: An Overview

This workshop will provide an overview of undergraduate academic advising at UNG. It will look at the organizational structure of advising at UNG, discuss the blended academic advising model, and provide a picture of the student lifecycle at UNG. It will also look more in-depth at the function of academic advising, as well as the role of academic advising within the operational structure of UNG.

This workshop will provide an overview of undergraduate academic advising training and reference resources available to all academic advisors at UNG. It will provide an in-depth overview of the Academic Advisor Training course shell in D2L, information that is available, and how to use provided resources.

Academic Advising Technology: An Overview

This workshop will provide a brief overview of key academic advising technology: the AdviseMe Appointment System, student records, and DegreeWorks. It will provide instructions and resources for implementing AdviseMe, a review of the DegreeWorks audit system, and practical tips for accessing and interpreting student records.

Curriculum at UNG: An Academic Advisor’s Perspective

This workshop will examine the structure of UNG’s curriculum and majors from the perspective of an academic advisor, starting with Core IMPACTS and Field of Study, and then transitioning into upper-level major-specific requirements. It will discuss the professional academic advising approach to guiding students through curriculum. This workshop will also discuss where to find information about curriculum, and best practices for assisting students who are considering a major change.

This workshop will review key academic policies at UNG that frequently impact students, their course choices and course loads, and registration/ability to register. It will provide best practices for academic advisors as they assist students and troubleshoot issues. It will review procedures and points of contact for navigating various academic policies.

Transferring: In, Out, and Everything In-Between

This workshop will look at all things transfer: how transfer credit works, how to identify transfer credit, and what to do with transfer credit. This session will talk about best practices for advising upper-level transfer students. This session will also discuss best practices for advising students who are planning to transfer to another institution. It will also provide an overview of transient student status and how to advise students who wish to take coursework at other institutions.

Advising and Financial Aid: Course Program of Study (CPOS)

This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of Course Program of Study (CPOS). It will provide information about CPOS, including what it is, the CPOS process, and must-know information for academic advisors. It will also discuss best practices for academic advisors for assisting students with CPOS-related questions, common questions/issues, and points of contact for resolution.

Academic Advising Full Circle: Graduation and Orientation

In celebration of the conclusion of the academic year, this workshop will discuss the graduation process at UNG, and best practices for advising students as they approach graduation. In addition, it will provide an overview of UNG’s orientation and advance scheduling process for new incoming students, to lend insight into the student experience as they matriculate to UNG.
