HEERF III - UNG CARES III Program

    Out of Funds

In April 2020, UNG received $6.8 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding to provide UNG CARES grants to eligible students currently enrolled who experienced educational disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During spring and summer semesters of 2021, UNG was awarded an additional $6.8 million from the federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to continue to support students who had an exceptional need due to COVID-19.

Starting in Fall Semester 2021, UNG will award an additional $21 million through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to help students with their cost of attendance needs. We continued to offer CARES Emergency funding to students again spring semester but all Emergency funding has been given out. We hope that the HEERF CARES funding has helped students continue their education during these trying times.

    UNG CARES
    • Will emergency grants be available for future terms?

No, the HEERF program has ended unless Congress approves additional funding. This is very unlikely, so students need to develop a plan on how to pay for future terms. Your Financial aid counselor and the Student Money Management Center team are great resources to help.

There Are Two Ways To Get Funding – Automatic and Emergency

NOTE:  Emergency funding is out of funds and the last Automatic Allocation will go out to students who qualify the week of February 28. We will be out of Allocation funds on February 28.

To receive a disbursement of federal aid through the HEERF III (UNG CARES III) program, a UNG student must:

    • be enrolled for spring semester as of February 1, 2022;
    • have completed a FAFSA for 2021-2022 by November 19, 2021; and
    • be eligible for Title IV financial aid, with an estimated family contribution (EFC) of $5,846 or less.

Students will receive two automatic disbursements - one in the week of February 1 and if funding is available one the week of March 1.

The amount of each disbursement will range from $300 to $700 per student and will vary based number of credit hours enrolled. The total allocations for Spring semester will range from $600 and $1,400 if funding is available.

Failure to set-up a refund preference prior to January 24, 2022, may cause a minimum 14-day delay in receiving these funds.

How Do Students Get Their Disbursement?

The timing of your refund will be determined by having a refund preference set-up. Check your refund preference status now to ensure the fastest possible deposit of funds.

    Check Your Refund Preference

Failure to set-up a refund preference prior to January 24, 2021, may cause a minimum 14-day delay in receiving these funds.

For assistance, contact the UNG Business Office.

    • Will HEERF III (UNG CARES III) be provided after spring 2022 semester?

No the HEERF program ends March 2022 unless Congress approves additional funding.

    • When should I expect to receive the HEERF III (UNG CARES III) automatic disbursement?

Spring 2022 disbursements should appear on Banner student accounts the week of February 8, 2022, and refunds will begin by the end of that week. If funds are available, a second automatic disbursement will be made the week of March 1, 2022.

    • How were eligibility requirements determined and why are there exclusions?

Eligibility parameters were established based upon several factors, including stipulations in the federal HEERF III Act, federal law, U.S. Department of Education guidelines, and University System of Georgia guidance. UNG used those criteria to assist as many students as possible with the emphasis on those with exceptional need.

HEERF III (UNG CARES III) Spring Emergency Grant - Out of Funds

Students who are facing cost of attendance hardships may apply for the UNG CARES III Emergency Grant to receive up to $1,800 in assistance. The Emergency Grant applications will be reviewed and placed on student accounts weekly starting February 1 as funds last.

The application reviewers will be evaluating the need of the student to attend college. Funds will be available until the fund is exhausted. Emergency funding is open to all UNG students. Funding may be limited due to high demand, so apply early.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, students must:

    • fully complete the HEERF III (UNG CARES III) Emergency Grant application; (available starting January 17, 2022)
    • be enrolled for spring semester as of February 1, 2022

For assistance, contact the Office of Financial Aid.

    • If a student gets the automatic disbursement of HEERF III (UNG CARES III) funding, can they still apply for the Emergency Grant?

Yes. The fall automatic disbursement of HEERF III (UNG CARES III) funding does not limit a student's eligibility to apply for the Emergency Grant.

    • How were eligibility requirements determined and why are there exclusions?

Eligibility parameters were established based upon several factors, including stipulations in the federal HEERF II Act, federal law, U.S. Department of Education guidelines, and University System of Georgia guidance. UNG used those criteria to assist as many students as possible with the emphasis on those with exceptional need due.

    • HEERF I - UNG CARES 2020

UNG received $6.8 million through the CARES Act Student Portion and used those funds to provide automatic and immediate UNG CARES Program grants to eligible students who were enrolled for the spring 2020 semester for expenses related to educational disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UNG will prioritized grants to students with the greatest levels of financial need using established processes to distribute need-based institutional aid. Similar grants were also available to continuing students who enroll for summer semester.

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

What Students Need to Do for Automatic Grant

Each eligible student selected a refund preference to receive UNG CARES funds in a timely manner. Failure to complete this process delayed receipt of the funds for a minimum of 14 days.

      • Will UNG CARES automatic disbursements be provided for summer semester?

Yes, we plan to provide UNG CARES funding for summer semester to continuing students, as funding remains available, based upon the same eligibility requirements as spring semester. The disbursements will range from $100 to $400 per student for summer and will be based on summer semester enrollment as of June 3, 2020.

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

      • When should a student expect to receive the UNG CARES automatic disbursement?

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

Spring 2020 disbursements should appear on Banner student accounts the week of April 27-May 1, and refunds will begin by the end of that week.

Summer 2020 disbursements will appear on Banner student accounts beginning June 3, and refunds will begin the week of June 8.

The timing of the refund will be determined by having a refund preference set-up .

Failure to set-up a refund preference prior to April 27 may cause a minimum 14-day delay in receiving these funds. For assistance contact the Business Office.

      • How did UNG determine which students would receive UNG CARES Program funds and how much those students would receive?

As directed by the U.S. Department of Education and the University System of Georgia, UNG determined which students are eligible to receive UNG CARES Program funding based upon eligibility to receive federal Title IV financial aid and enrollment status. For spring semester UNG CARES Emergency Grants eligible students with an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) greater than 15,000 received $100. Eligible students with an EFC of 15,000 or less and enrolled in 1-5 credit hours received $200. Eligible students with an EFC of 15,000 or less and enrolled in 6-11 credit hours received $250. Eligible students with an EFC of 15,000 or less and enrolled full-time (a minimum of 12 hours) received $500.

Summer semester disbursements will be calculated using the same methodology for allocations of $100 - $400.  UNG CARES Emergency Grants, with a maximum grant of $700, are available to eligible students by application until all funds are expended

UNG CARES Emergency Grant & UNG Emergency Funds

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

      UNG CARES Emergency Grant

Students who faced specific hardships applied for the UNG CARES Emergency Grant to receive up to $700 in further assistance. The funds were used for expenses related to COVID-19-related disruptions as allowable under the stipulations of the federal CARES Act (i.e., housing, utilities, food, technology, books, supplies, transportation, gas, and insurance). The Emergency Grant applications will be reviewed and placed on student accounts daily.

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

      • If a student gets the automatic disbursement of UNG CARES funding, can they still apply for the Emergency Grant?

Yes, receiving the spring and/or summer automatic disbursement of UNG CARES funding does not limit a student's eligibility to apply for the Emergency Grant.

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

      • What is the maximum amount of the UNG CARES Emergency Grant?

The maximum amount of funding available via the UNG CARES Emergency Grant is $700 per student and will be available until federal funds have been exhausted.

As of June 23, 2020, all funds have been disbursed.

      UNG Emergency Fund

The UNG Foundation is partnering with UNG’s Office of Financial Aid and the Student Money Management Center to provide resources for those who may not be eligible for federal CARES Act funding, and there are likely additional resources available to assist with emergency needs.
