Montgomery GI Bill – Chapter 1606

First Time Applicant

  1. Apply online for VA Education Benefits
    • School's address: University of North Georgia, 82 College Circle, Dahlonega, Ga. 30597 (regardless of the campus you will be attending).
    • Training starts the first day of the UNG semester you will be attending. Refer to the UNG Academic Calendar.
    • Dates you entered and separated from active duty, you can find these dates on your DD214 (items 12a and 12b).
  2. Print and keep a copy of the final page of your application showing the confirmation number for your application.
  3. Submit the following documents to the UNG Veterans Benefits office as early as possible to receive your GI Bill®:
  4. Once we receive your VEC we will certify your eligible enrolled hours and you will receive email confirmation from the VA.
  5. After your eligible benefits have been certified by the financial aid office, you will receive an updated College Financing Plan sent to your UNG email with estimated VA Benefits. *Only VA benefits sent directly to UNG will be shown. 

Transferring to UNG

  1. If you are transferring to UNG, you will need to change your place of training through the Veterans Affairs website.
    • Scroll down the page to the “Find your education benefits form”
    • Answer a couple of questions and it will take you to the correct application to make your changes.
  2. Complete the appropriate UNG Veteran Enrollment Certification

Points to Remember

  • Veteran Enrollment Certificate (VEC) is required each semester you want to use your benefits.
  • Chapter 1606 requires monthly Verification through WAVE or call 1-877-823-2378. Use your Social Security number for your file number.
  • You can only be certified with the VA for classes on the Degree Works Audit for your major listed on Banner.
  • VA considers 12 credit hours as full time. Less than full time is prorated.
  • All Major changes must be reflected in Banner to be certified.
  • To add a minor, refer to the Campus and Degree Level Changes webpage.
  • If you withdraw from a class, you may owe money back to the VA.
  • You will receive prorated payments the first and last months of the semester if you are not in school the full month.
  • If you are in your final semester and graduating, you may take courses that are not required for your degree program if you need additional classes to reach your full time benefits.  This is known as "rounding out".  If after UNG certifies your hours and some are not eligible, but you believe you are eligible for the "rounding out" exception please contact us for a review.

Post 9/11 - Chapter 33

First Time Applicant

  3. Submit the following documents to the UNG Veterans Benefits office as early as possible to receive your GI Bill®:

  • To add a minor, refer to the Campus and Degree Level Changes webpage.
  • If you withdraw from a class, you may owe money back to the VA.
  • You will receive prorated payments the first and last months of the semester if you are not in school the full month.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) – Chapter 31

First Time Applicant

  1. Check to see if you qualify and apply online.
  2. Once you complete the application, you will be assigned a VR&E Counselor with the VA. If the VR&E Counselor approves you for benefits, the counselor will contact the UNG Financial Aid Office to verify the benefits.
  3. Complete the appropriate UNG Veteran Enrollment Certification
  4. Once we receive your VEC and confirmation from your VR&E counselor of eligible benefits, we will post the funding to the student invoice. Student schedules will be held while waiting for receipt of benefits.
  5. After your eligible benefits have been certified by the financial aid office, you will receive an updated College Financing Plan sent to your UNG email with estimated VA Benefits. *Only VA benefits sent directly to UNG will be shown. 

Transferring to UNG

  1. Contact your VR&E Counselor for assistance in transferring your funding to UNG.
  2. Complete the appropriate UNG Veteran Enrollment Certification
