CTLL Offers Services for Part-Time Faculty

    Posted: September 24, 2020

The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CTLL) offers a variety of services to both full-and part-time UNG faculty. CTLL bases these offerings upon four areas: Teaching and Learning, Academic Leadership, Scholarly Productivity, and Career Milestones. Although the last of these areas applies primarily to tenure-track faculty, the other three are rich with resources that should be of interest to all.

Many of the workshops offered through CTLL would benefit the part-time faculty member. For example, the New Faculty Institute/Teaching Conversations workshop series supports acclimation to the institution for new faculty and teaching staff and fosters camaraderie for all levels of faculty while promoting teaching excellence and professional development. These six Monday workshops are offered throughout the academic year and faculty can sign up for individual sessions.

Another workshop series is Research-Based Teaching Series (RBTS). Faculty can benefit from these workshops in two ways: RBTS not only provides information and resources for faculty seeking to enhance their own pedagogical practices, but also gives faculty an opportunity to present their work to peers. Part-time faculty who want to present a topic for this series can submit a presentation. A call for proposals for the 2021-2022 school year will be open spring/summer 2021.

For part-time faculty who want to advance their Scholarly Productivity through research and writing skills, CTLL offers three writing workshop series through the Write@UNG initiative led by Senior Faculty Fellow Michael Rifenburg. These writing tracks are Friday Writing Sessions, which includes individual topic-based workshops offered in both the fall and spring; Shut Up & Write, which is offered in the fall; and the Write Now Academy, which takes applications at the end of the fall semester for the spring. More information about all three of these series can be found on the Write@UNG website.

Support is also available through Teaching Circle grants. Teaching Circles provide an opportunity for informal but productive conversations among colleagues interested in exploring topics related to academic excellence. CTLL provides mini-grant funding to selected groups of faculty and teaching staff who want to form a Teaching Circle on a particular topic of their choosing. The deadline for sending in your application is the second Monday of October at 5 p.m., although applications submitted after this deadline will be accepted if funds allow.

Part-time faculty should feel free to reach out to CTLL to request assistance with questions about the design of instruction, conversation on classroom performance, and advice on navigating the University system.
