Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of North Georgia!

As a new student, you're bound to have tons of questions about starting classes at the University of North Georgia. You know you're accepted, but what's next? There are a number of tasks you must complete to finish the enrollment process and begin your journey as a UNG Nighthawk.

Please read through section and item carefully and explore the links provided for more information.

    1. Immediate Steps After Acceptance
    2. Actions to Complete Prior to Orientation/Class Registration
    3. Actions to Complete After Orientation/Prior to First Day of Class

    Questions?

Contact NEST us at nest@ung.edu  or call 706-864-1010 so we can get you the information you need!

    1. Immediate Steps After Acceptance

    • 1.1 Request Your F-1/J-1 Documents

Now that you are accepted, the next step is to get your Form I-20 or DS-2019 so that you can apply for your visa. To attend UNG as an F-1 student, you must have an I-20 issued by UNG. To attend UNG as a J-1 student, you must have a DS-2019 issued by UNG. Refer to the International Student & Scholar Services website for more information on beginning this process.

    • 1.2 Activate Your UNG Account

You will use the same username and password to log in to a number of important university systems. Use the activate your UNG account link to find your username and enroll in the password management system.

Once you have activated your UNG account, for your security, all UNG contact and correspondence will be sent to your UNG email account. Please also use your UNG email account when contacting UNG faculty and staff. It is important to be checking this email consistently on a weekly or daily basis.

Please note: After a student is admitted, it may take up to 48 hours before the student's information is available to activate. If you are not able to activate your UNG account after 48 hours, contact the IT help desk at 706-864-1922 for assistance with activation.

Once complete, then you will be able to access and explore:

      • Student Email
      • BannerWeb
      • eLearning
      • myUNG
    • 1.3 Submit Your Confirmation of Acceptance Form

All students should complete a Confirmation of Acceptance; however, the method could be different depending on your circumstances. See the Confirmation of Acceptance page in Undergraduate Admissions for what action you need to take. You must submit your confirmation by our deadlines, or if accepted after the confirmation deadline, within two weeks of acceptance.

Students must complete the Confirmation of Acceptance process prior to receiving access to the Online Pre-Orientation modules.

    • 1.4 Complete Your New Student Orientation Requirement

International students are not required to attend the UNG New/Transfer student orientation but must complete the Online Pre-Orientation modules.

All international students are required to attend International Student Orientation, hosted by the Center for Global Engagement. The dates for the mandatory campus orientation will be sent to you via email.

    • 1.5 Confirm Your Housing Arrangements

Only the Dahlonega Campus offers on-campus residential housing. Students enrolling on all other campuses can use the off-campus housing portal to learn more about rental and roommate options near those campuses.

There is a residential housing requirement on the Dahlonega campus for students that have not satisfied the minimum semester hour requirement with very limited exceptions. All full-time students accepted on the Dahlonega campus of UNG should carefully review the Residence Policy.

      Dahlonega Residential Students (Non-Cadet)

If accepted as a residential student on the Dahlonega Campus, you must submit a housing application. Once your Confirmation of Acceptance form processes, the Office of Residence Life will email additional instructions via UNG Student Email. This email also signifies that you now have access to the Housing portal/application process. You are encouraged to start the process as soon as possible and monitor your UNG emails closely once you have started for further instructions.

Please note that even if you decide not to attend UNG, you are still responsible for the $150 housing application fee if you have already applied for housing. If you decide not to attend after choosing a bed and submitting the housing contract, you must submit a completed Housing Cancellation Request to the Office of Residence Life.  Financial penalties may apply.

      Cadet Housing Contract

Cadets will need to visit the Cadet Housing page to sign housing contracts.

Cadets who apply for housing will be charged a $150 one-time, nonrefundable housing application fee. After signing your Cadet Housing Contract, the Assistant Commandant will notify the business office to apply this fee to your student invoice within 7-10 business days and you may pay it with your tuition and fees.

Be sure to follow all other steps in the Cadet Admissions Manual.

    2. Actions to Complete Prior to Orientation/Class Registration

    • 2.1 Submit a Photo for Your UNG ID Card (Nighthawks Card)

Visit the UNG ID Card Photo Submission page to see photo guidelines and the photo submission portal. Students required to attend orientation must upload a photo at least three business days prior to your orientation session.

Note: Online Photo Submission for new terms will not be available until the below dates.

      Semester Availability
      Summer mid - April
      Fall mid - May
      Spring mid - October
    • 2.2 Complete eCore Introduction Quiz

Complete the eCore Introduction Quiz whether or not you plan to take an online course at this time. The quiz takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

eCore courses are designed, developed, taught and supported by faculty and staff from the University System of Georgia (USG) and are a great option for completing core curriculum requirements.

Please note: The eCore academic calendar (start/stop dates) is different from the normal UNG academic calendar.

Visit the UNG Online Learning web page for an explanation of the difference between eCore classes and UNG Online classes, as well as other important information.

    • 2.3 Set Up Your Accessibility Accommodations (If Applicable)

As you may already know, obtaining special accommodations in college is different than it is in high school.  If you previously had an IEP, 504 plan, or other documentation that would reflect the need for accommodations, please contact the Office of Student Accessibility Services to discuss your specific needs and the process to receive accommodations at UNG. Please be advised that the intake process takes time, so it’s important to schedule an appointment before the start of term to ensure your accommodations are in place when classes begin. Students must actively request accommodations, even when they transfer from another college, through the Student Accessibility Services office in order to receive them.

Once registered, you will need to notify your professor(s) in order to receive special accommodations.

    • 2.4 Register for Campus Mailbox (Dahlonega - Residential Only)

Residential students on the Dahlonega Campus can complete the Mailbox Request Form to receive a mailbox at the UNG Post Office located in Hoag Student Center.

    • 2.5 Complete Survey (Fall Freshmen Only)

Beginning April 4, visit the Freshmen Survey web page to complete the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE). This survey provides the institution with valuable information on how to structure and educate students on available resources. This survey is only available to new freshmen admitted for the fall term.

    • 2.6 Monitor Advisement Correspondence (Class Registration Information)

Academic Advisors will work to create class schedules prior to the orientation date for students completing the International Student My Academic Interest Form. Many advisors attempt to reach out to students via email and/or telephone when this process begins a few weeks before the scheduled orientation date. Be sure to monitor your email and respond to any requests for additional information or a virtual meeting.

Academic advisors from the academic major listed on the Academic Interest Form build these schedules on a first-come first-served basis based on the responses you provided on the Academic Interest Form. This process takes time and you may not hear from your advisor or receive a schedule until 24 hours before your scheduled orientation date. During orientation, you will have the opportunity to review your “advance” schedule and make changes as needed. After orientation, your time ticket will remain open so you can make additional changes needed. Students have until the end of the add/drop period to solidify their class schedule. Due to high volume, advisors will not be able to assist you with schedule changes until orientation.

Advisors will build your schedule in compliance with F-1 or J-1 regulations.

In accordance with the Advance Schedule Drop policy, you will be removed from your classes if you do not complete the orientation requirement.

    • 2.7 Submit Your Immunization Form

All new students (freshman, transfers, and others) attending regularly scheduled classes or receiving resident credit are required to submit a Certificate of Immunization to Student Health Services. Please refer to the Dean of Students website for more information and to download the form. Students will have a registration hold placed on their account preventing registration for a second semester until this documentation is submitted.

    3. Actions to Complete After Orientation/Prior to First Day of Class

    • 3.1 Review Invoice, Pay Tuition and Fee Bill, and Sign Up for Payment Plan

Please visit the Payment Deadlines & Information webpage for approximate information on when to pay fees. Students attending an orientation will have a different fee payment deadline which will be after their scheduled orientation session. You will learn more about this at orientation. We do encourage you to go ahead and set up a payment plan after you are registered for classes, but prior to orientation if needed.

Learn more about viewing and paying your student invoice.

    • 3.2 Order Your Virtual Parking Permit

All vehicles on campus are required to register for a valid UNG parking permit. Parking permits will be available for registration for summer and fall starts on August 15. Students beginning classes in the summer semester do not need to register for a parking permit until August 15. Learn more about registering your vehicle.

    • 3.3 Order Textbooks

Find textbooks for your courses at the UNG Bookstore.

    • 3.4 Check Your Admissions Holds

Check your application status to ensure that the Office of Admissions has everything they need to finalize your admittance and begin courses at UNG. A complete list of Admissions paperwork can be found on the Check Your Application Status webpage. Scroll to the bottom to view holds that may prevent you from registering for classes in future terms.

    • 3.5 Check for Holds
      1. Log in to Banner
      2. Select the "Student" tab
      3. Select "Student Records"
      4. Select "View Holds"

Orientation (OR) Hold: If you have an OR hold, please note it will be automatically removed once you complete orientation requirements.

Registration Agreement Needed (RN) Hold: This hold prohibits registration. It is required every six months.

      To remove the hold:

      1. Log in to Banner
      2. Select the "Student" tab
      3. Select "Student Records"
      4. Select "Manage Registration Agreement"
      5. Read the terms of the agreement, and select "I Agree" at the bottom.
      6. Once "I Agree" is clicked, the hold will be instantly removed.

Please reference the Student Holds website for an explanation of other holds and how to remove them.

    • 3.6 Schedule Adjustments
      1. After attending live virtual orientation, students who do not already have a time ticket will receive one to make course schedule adjustments if needed, pending course availability. The time ticket refers to the window of time that the student is permitted to build a schedule, add classes and make changes to classes prior to the first day of class. The time ticket becomes available once the student satisfies any orientation and advising requirements.
      2. Students have until noon on the last day of "drop/add week" to make schedule adjustments.
      3. Please review the Core Curriculum and your Plan of Study before attempting any schedule adjustments.
      4. Find information on How To Register using the Nighthawk Registration system. Students will be able to search for in-person, hybrid, and online courses within the Nighthawk Registration system.
      5. You can reach out to your Academic Advisor for assistance if you are unable to adjust your schedule on your own.
        • The Academic Advisor is listed on your Tranguid in Banner. You can also go to adviseme.ung.edu and search for an appointment time with your advisor.
        • Learn more about Academic Advising.

Reminder: International students are required by regulation to maintain a full course load. Failure to maintain an appropriate course schedule will jeopardize your non-immigrant status.

    • 3.7 Review the Tech Talk Guide

The Tech Talk guide is an introduction to the highly utilized technologies available at UNG. Students should be familiar with each of the items in this guide.

To access the Tech Talk Checklist, log in to UNG Connect. Go to Menu Bar on the left side of the UNG Connect home page. Scroll down to My Checklist and click on Tech Talk Guide. You will see a series of items with clickable links. As you complete each item, please mark the checkbox. Keep going until your completion bar reads 100%.

    • 3.8 Complete Part One of Both SAPU and AlcoholEdu

Per a Board of Regents initiative, all new college students in Georgia are required to complete AlcoholEdu and Sexual Assault Prevention modules. Due to a switch in training providers, these modules are currently unavailable. Students will be notified after the add/drop period in January via their UNG email once they are available. During this transition period, no holds pertaining to these modules will be placed on student accounts.
